# How do you buy a paid Discord or Skool community?

Short answer: Both platforms let the owner hand over a community: Discord has a Transfer Ownership option, and Skool supports group transfer on its Pro plan. The harder question is whether members stay once the host changes. Check monthly churn and active members from payment and platform data, cost the hosting hours, and tie part of the price to retention.

FirstPass Memo offers a free red-flag checker for business-for-sale listings and a $79 first-pass memo on a specific listing you send, paid after delivery. Paste any listing below for payback, the asking multiple and its red flags. Nothing you paste leaves your browser. ## Can a Discord server or Skool group be transferred?

Yes, both have built-in ownership transfers:

- Discord. Discord's support article (read 16 October 2026) says the owner opens Server Settings, then Members, chooses the new owner and selects Transfer Ownership. The old owner stays a member, and "once a server has been transferred, Discord's Support team is not able to transfer it back".

- Skool. Skool's Help Center (updated 22 January 2026) says group transfer is supported only on the Pro plan. The new owner must first be an admin; after the transfer the group is archived until the new owner adds payment details, and upgrade charges are non-refundable.

Payments are separate. If members pay through Stripe, a bot or a third-party membership tool, plan how each subscription moves, because a broken payment link is the quickest way to lose paying members during a handover.

## Why is a community harder to buy than a website?

Members usually pay for access to a person: the host's calls, posts and replies. When the host changes, some leave. That makes three numbers matter more than the member count: monthly churn from payment data, the share of members active each week, and how many hours the seller spends running it. Our checker flags churn above 5% (https://firstpassmemo.com/flags/monthly-churn-above-5-percent/) and more than 10 owner hours a week (https://firstpassmemo.com/flags/owner-works-over-10-hours-a-week/).

## What does a paid community look like through the checker?

A composite Skool community for freelance designers asks $45,000 on $3,200 of monthly membership revenue and $2,700 of profit, with 9% monthly churn and 12 hours a week of live calls and posts. The checker (https://firstpassmemo.com/checker/) shows only 16.7 months of payback, which looks cheap, and flags the churn and the hours. Composite example, not a real listing

Paid Skool community for freelance designers, $29 a month membership Asking price: $45,000 MRR: $3,200 Average monthly profit: $2,700 Churn: 9% monthly Business age: 14 months Owner hours: 12 hours per week for live calls and posts

Traffic sources typed in: Social 60%, Email 30%, Direct 10%.

What the red-flag checker (https://firstpassmemo.com/checker/) returns: a payback of 16.7 months (1.39× annual profit) on average monthly profit, and these flags:

Medium Monthly churn 9%

At 9% a month, about 68% of today's customers would be gone within 12 months without new sales.

Ask: How is churn calculated (customers or revenue), and how many new customers arrive each month?

How this rule works (https://firstpassmemo.com/flags/monthly-churn-above-5-percent/)

Medium Seller reports 12 hours a week

That time either becomes your job or a cost you pay someone else, which lowers the real profit.

Ask: Which tasks take the time, and what would it cost to hand them to a contractor?

How this rule works (https://firstpassmemo.com/flags/owner-works-over-10-hours-a-week/)

Medium No connected data source mentioned

The figures appear to be typed in by the seller. Nothing in the text says revenue or traffic is connected from Stripe, PayPal, analytics or a marketplace check.

Ask: Can you give read-only access to the payment processor and analytics, or exports that match the P&L?

How this rule works (https://firstpassmemo.com/flags/no-connected-data-source/)

Low Concentration not disclosed

The listing does not say how much revenue comes from the largest customer, affiliate program or traffic partner.

Ask: What share of revenue comes from the top 1 and top 3 customers or partners?

How this rule works (https://firstpassmemo.com/flags/concentration-not-disclosed/)

## What does 9% churn do to the payback?

With $250 of new memberships a month, the churn stress test (https://firstpassmemo.com/tools/saas-churn-stress-test/) gives 17.9 months of payback and revenue settling near $2,778 a month. Stop the new sign-ups, which can happen if they came from the seller's personal following, and revenue falls to $1,032 within a year.

Composite example, run through the SaaS churn stress test (https://firstpassmemo.com/tools/saas-churn-stress-test/)

| MRR today | $3,200 |
| --- | --- |
| Monthly revenue churn | 9% |
| New MRR added each month | $250 |
| Profit margin | 84% |
| Asking price | $45,000 |
| MRR after 12 months, new sales continue | $2,914 |
| MRR after 12 months, no new sales | $1,032 |
| Payback if MRR stayed flat | 16.7 months |
| Payback with churn and new sales | 17.9 months |
| Payback with churn and no new sales | never |
| All future profit if sales stop | $29,867 |

Before paying for the 12 hours a week of hosting, that is the risk to price. A common answer is to pay part of the price as an earnout on retained members over six to twelve months, with the seller co-hosting during the handover; see how seller financing and earnouts work (https://firstpassmemo.com/answers/how-does-seller-financing-work-when-buying-a-website/).

## Frequently asked questions

### How do you transfer ownership of a Skool community?

Skool's Help Center says the group must be on the Pro plan; the new owner is made an admin, then owner. The group is archived until the new owner adds payment details.

### Can Discord reverse a server ownership transfer?

No. Discord's support article says that once a server has been transferred, its Support team is not able to transfer it back, so transfer only once your payment is held in escrow.

### How do I protect myself if members leave after I buy?

Tie part of the price to retention, for example an earnout on members still paying after six months, and agree a handover period in which the seller keeps hosting.
