# How do you buy a paid Substack newsletter?

Short answer: Substack has a built-in ownership transfer that both owners confirm, after which the new owner controls settings, subscribers and billing. Do not disconnect the Stripe account: Substack says that refunds and cancels every paid subscription. Plan the Stripe change with Stripe first, verify paid churn and growth, and price the risk that readers followed the writer, not the publication.

## How does a Substack ownership transfer work?

Substack's support article (updated 5 March 2026, read 16 October 2026) describes a built-in transfer: the owner opens Publication Settings, goes to the Danger Zone, chooses Transfer ownership and enters the buyer's email. Both sides must confirm, the recipient's email expires after 6 hours, and once accepted "the new owner will have full administrative control over the publication, including access to settings, subscribers, and billing".

## What happens to paid subscribers and Stripe?

This is the step that can destroy the value. Substack's article on turning off paid subscriptions says that choosing "Disconnect Stripe" will refund and notify all paid subscribers, cancel all paid subscriptions, and revoke Substack's access to the Stripe account. So never disconnect the seller's Stripe account to connect your own. Instead:

- Ask Stripe how to change the owner of the existing account; its support page on business sales says the current owner contacts Stripe first, then updates the payout bank account, statement descriptor, owner email, legal business name and tax ID (details (https://firstpassmemo.com/answers/how-to-transfer-a-stripe-account-when-you-buy-a-saas/)).

- If you are in a different country from the seller, read Stripe's cross-border rules first, because an account's country cannot be changed.

- Ask Substack support, in writing, to confirm the plan before money moves.

Other platforms such as beehiiv have their own transfer and payment steps; get them from that platform's support before you sign.

## What should you verify in a paid Substack?

- Paid subscribers and revenue by month from Substack's dashboard and Stripe, matched to payouts.

- Paid churn: cancellations per month and annual-plan renewals coming up.

- Growth sources: Substack's network and recommendations, social, or the writer's personal following.

- Engagement: opens and clicks per post over 12 months.

- Writer dependence: will the seller keep writing, and will readers accept a new voice?

## What does a paid Substack look like through the checker?

A composite personal-finance Substack asks $50,000 on $2,400 of paid MRR and $2,050 a month of profit. The checker (https://firstpassmemo.com/checker/) gives 24.4 months of payback, flags that no churn figure was given and that most traffic comes from one channel. Open this example in the checker (https://firstpassmemo.com/checker/#r=eyJ2IjoxLCJwIjoyNC40LCJ4IjoyLjAzLCJjIjpbWyJDSEFOTkVMX0NPTkMiLCJNRUQiXSxbIk5PX0NIVVJOIiwiTUVEIl0sWyJVTlZFUklGSUVEIiwiTUVEIl0sWyJDT05DX1VOS05PV04iLCJMT1ciXV19).

Composite example, not a real listing

Paid Substack newsletter on personal finance, paid subscriptions only Asking price: $50,000 MRR: $2,400 Average monthly profit: $2,050 Business age: 3 years Owner hours: 10 hours per week

Traffic sources typed in: Email 70%, Social 20%, Direct 10%.

What the red-flag checker (https://firstpassmemo.com/checker/) returns: a payback of 24.4 months (2.03× annual profit) on average monthly profit, and these flags:

Medium Email is about 70% of traffic

One channel carries most of the traffic, so the business depends on it staying as it is.

Ask: What is behind the email traffic, and how durable is it?

How this rule works (https://firstpassmemo.com/flags/one-channel-over-60-percent-of-traffic/)

Medium No churn figure for a recurring-revenue business

Churn decides how much of today's revenue will still be there in a year. Without it, the price is a guess.

Ask: What were monthly customer churn and revenue churn for each of the last 12 months?

How this rule works (https://firstpassmemo.com/flags/no-churn-figure/)

Medium No connected data source mentioned

The figures appear to be typed in by the seller. Nothing in the text says revenue or traffic is connected from Stripe, PayPal, analytics or a marketplace check.

Ask: Can you give read-only access to the payment processor and analytics, or exports that match the P&L?

How this rule works (https://firstpassmemo.com/flags/no-connected-data-source/)

Low Concentration not disclosed

The listing does not say how much revenue comes from the largest customer, affiliate program or traffic partner.

Ask: What share of revenue comes from the top 1 and top 3 customers or partners?

How this rule works (https://firstpassmemo.com/flags/concentration-not-disclosed/)

The seller writes 10 hours a week. Paying a writer $35 an hour for that in the true payback calculator (https://firstpassmemo.com/tools/payback-calculator/) leaves $533 a month, and true payback becomes 93.8 months instead of 24.4.

Composite example, run through the true payback calculator (https://firstpassmemo.com/tools/payback-calculator/)

| Asking price | $50,000 |
| --- | --- |
| Stated monthly profit | $2,050 |
| Owner hours a week | 10 |
| Hourly cost of that time | $35 |
| Payback as listed | 24.4 months |
| Multiple as listed | 2.03× |
| Owner time per month | $1,517 |
| Profit you keep | $533 |
| True payback | 93.8 months |
| True annual multiple | 7.81× |

A paid newsletter is a writing job with a subscriber list attached. Price it on what is left after paying for the writing. Our free MCP server (https://firstpassmemo.com/tools/ai-listing-check/) runs the same check from an AI assistant.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can you transfer a Substack to a new owner?

Yes. Substack's Danger Zone settings include Transfer ownership; both owners confirm by email, and the new owner gets full control of settings, subscribers and billing.

### Will paid subscribers be cancelled when a Substack is sold?

Not by the ownership transfer itself, but disconnecting Stripe refunds and cancels every paid subscription, according to Substack. Keep the existing Stripe account and change its owner with Stripe instead.

### How much is a paid Substack worth?

Flippa's newsletter guide puts most profitable newsletters at 30 to 45 times monthly net profit. Use profit after paying for the writing, and discount for high churn or a voice readers will miss.
