# How do you spot botted or fake traffic on a website for sale (Flippa and elsewhere)?

Short answer: Botted traffic shows up as sessions with near-zero engagement time, one page per visit, odd countries and spikes with no dated cause, usually as Direct or unknown referrers. The strongest check is Search Console: bots do not create Google search clicks, so organic sessions far above Search Console clicks need an explanation before you buy.

## Check a listing now, free

FirstPass Memo offers a free red-flag checker for business-for-sale listings and, during the beta, a free first-pass memo on a specific listing you send. Paste any listing below for payback, the asking multiple and its red flags. Nothing you paste leaves your browser. Open the full checker (https://firstpassmemo.com/checker/) to unlock every flag with its seller question.

## What does botted traffic look like in Google Analytics?

Bought or bot traffic usually shows up as visits that do nothing. In GA4 the pattern is a block of sessions with near-zero engagement time, one page per session, and no conversions, arriving as Direct or from referrers you have never heard of, often from countries the content is not written for. Real readers scroll, click a second page and come back.

- Engagement by channel. Compare average engagement time for Organic Search against Direct and Referral. A channel with many sessions and almost no engagement is the first thing to ask about.

- Country against content. An English-language site about US credit cards should not get a third of its visits from countries where nobody can use the product.

- Spikes with no cause. Each spike should match a dated event: a post going viral, a newsletter mention, a ranking change. Spikes that start in the months before the listing went live deserve the hardest questions.

- Referrers. Open the referral list. Traffic exchanges, unknown .xyz domains and "free traffic" services are not an audience.

## How do you check traffic when the seller only sends screenshots?

Do not rely on screenshots: they can show a different property, a filtered view or an edited image. Ask for Viewer access in Google Analytics and a restricted user in Search Console (both read-only, removable by the seller), or a live screen share where the seller logs in while you watch and you choose the reports and date ranges.

## Why is Search Console the best cross-check?

Search Console counts clicks from Google's own search results, so a bot sending fake visits to the site does not create Search Console clicks. If Analytics shows 40,000 organic sessions a month but Search Console shows 6,000 clicks, the gap needs an explanation. Check that the top queries match the site's content and that the clicks line up with the ad or affiliate income month by month.

## Does a marketplace badge mean traffic is verified?

Not necessarily. Flippa's help centre explains what each verified badge covers; a badge for connected revenue is not a traffic audit, and a seller can still type traffic figures into a listing. Read what the badge actually checks before you rely on it, and run the listing through our red-flag checker (https://firstpassmemo.com/checker/): it raises no traffic data (https://firstpassmemo.com/flags/no-traffic-data/), one channel over 60% (https://firstpassmemo.com/flags/one-channel-over-60-percent-of-traffic/) and SEO claims the traffic does not support (https://firstpassmemo.com/flags/claims-seo-growth-but-search-is-small/).

## What should you ask the seller?

- Can you add me as a Viewer in Analytics and a restricted user in Search Console for the property in the listing?

- What caused each traffic spike in the last 24 months, and can you show the source?

- Have you ever bought traffic, run paid campaigns or used a traffic exchange, and in which months?

- Why does Direct traffic have so little engagement compared with Organic Search?
