# Depends on a platform the buyer does not control

Short answer: Many online businesses rely on a platform such as Amazon, YouTube, an app store, Etsy or an ad network. A policy, fee, algorithm or account change there can cut revenue quickly, and the buyer has no say. Ask what share of revenue would stop if the account were suspended, and whether it has happened before.

Updated 7 October 2026 · Checker rule PLATFORM

## When the checker raises it

Raised as medium severity when the listing mentions a platform the business relies on: Amazon, Google Search (only when no traffic split is given), Meta, YouTube, TikTok, Etsy, the Shopify App Store, the Chrome Web Store, the App Store, an ad network, Google Maps or an AI model API.

## Why it matters

Platform dependence is normal. An Amazon FBA brand without Amazon is not a business. The point is to price it, not to avoid it.

Account history matters most. A seller account with past suspensions or policy warnings is more likely to have another. Transfers also matter: platforms have their own rules on changing an account's owner, so check them before you assume the account comes with the sale.

## A worked example

Composite example, not a real listing

Amazon FBA brand in kitchen storage, 14 SKUs Asking price: $135,000 plus inventory Average monthly revenue: $21,000 Average monthly profit: $3,900 Business age: 3 years Owner hours: 6 hours per week

Traffic or revenue sources typed in: Amazon 100%.

What the red-flag checker (https://firstpassmemo.com/checker/) returns: payback of 34.6 months on average monthly profit, and this flag:

Medium Depends on Amazon (100% of Amazon)

The listing relies on a platform the buyer does not control. A policy, fee, algorithm or account change there can cut revenue quickly.

Ask: Has the Amazon account ever had a suspension, listing removal or policy warning, and what share of revenue would stop if it did?

The same example also raises: No connected data source mentioned (https://firstpassmemo.com/flags/no-connected-data-source/), Concentration not disclosed (https://firstpassmemo.com/flags/concentration-not-disclosed/).

## What to check

- Ask whether the account has had a suspension, removal, strike or policy warning, and for the platform's own account-health page.

- Ask what share of revenue would stop if the platform changed its rules tomorrow.

- Check the platform's own rules on transferring the account.

## Questions to send the seller

- Has the Amazon account ever had a suspension, listing removal or policy warning, and what share of revenue would stop if it did?

- If the platform you rely on most changed its rules or closed the account tomorrow, what share of revenue would be at risk? Has it happened before?

- Have any of the business's accounts ever had a warning, suspension or policy strike?

- Which accounts transfer with the sale, and are any in your personal name or tied to another business?
