# Described as fully automated or running itself

Short answer: "Fully automated" usually means the work is done by tools and scripts the seller set up. Those tools cost money, break, change their terms and may not transfer, and someone still has to watch them. The claim is common and not wrong in itself; ask which tools run the site, what they cost and who fixes them.

## Check a listing now, free

FirstPass Memo offers a free red-flag checker for business-for-sale listings and a $79 first-pass memo on a specific listing you send, paid after delivery. Paste any listing below for payback, the asking multiple and its red flags. Nothing you paste leaves your browser. Open the full checker (https://firstpassmemo.com/checker/) to unlock every flag with its seller question. Only know the price and monthly profit? Put them in the link and the check runs on its own: firstpassmemo.com/checker/?ask=45000&profit=1500 (https://firstpassmemo.com/checker/?ask=45000&profit=1500&via=box).

## When the checker raises it

Raised as medium severity when the listing text says the business is fully or 100% automated, runs itself, runs on its own or on autopilot, or needs zero or no work.

## Why it matters

An automated site moves the work from writing to maintenance. If the tool costs are not in the P&L, the profit figure is too high.

Automation built on one person's accounts and API keys may not move cleanly to a new owner.

## A worked example

Composite example, not a real listing

Fully automated news aggregator, runs itself, display ads Asking price: $20,000 Average monthly revenue: $1,100 Average monthly profit: $950 Business age: 2 years Owner hours: 1 hour per week

Traffic or revenue sources typed in: Organic search 70%, Direct 30%.

What the red-flag checker (https://firstpassmemo.com/checker/) returns: payback of 21.1 months on average monthly profit, and this flag:

Medium Described as fully automated or running itself

Automated sites still need someone to watch tools, fix errors and keep accounts in good standing, and the tools themselves cost money and can change.

Ask: Which tools and scripts run the site, what do they cost each month, who fixes them when they break, and do they transfer?

The same example also raises: Organic search is about 70% of traffic (https://firstpassmemo.com/flags/organic-search-over-half-of-traffic/), No connected data source mentioned (https://firstpassmemo.com/flags/no-connected-data-source/), Concentration not disclosed (https://firstpassmemo.com/flags/concentration-not-disclosed/).

## What to check

- Ask for a list of every tool, script and account the site depends on, with its monthly cost.

- Ask whether those costs are in the P&L.

- Ask what broke in the last six months and who fixed it.

## Questions to send the seller

- Which tools and scripts run the site, what do they cost each month, who fixes them when they break, and do they transfer?
