# Owner works more than 10 hours a week: the hidden salary in the profit

Short answer: When the seller works more than ten hours a week, the stated profit includes an unpaid salary. After the sale, that time becomes your job or a cost you pay a contractor, which lowers the real profit. Ask which tasks take the time and what it would cost to hand them over.

## When the checker raises it

Raised as medium severity when the stated owner hours are more than 10 a week.

## Why it matters

Fifteen hours a week at $25 an hour is about $1,625 a month. Taken off a $2,300 monthly profit, payback on a $52,000 price moves from about 23 months to about 77.

Some buyers want a business to run themselves, and that is fine. The point is to pay for profit, not for a job.

## A worked example

Composite example, not a real listing

Faceless YouTube channel, history explainers, 210k subscribers Asking price: $52,000 Average monthly revenue: $2,900 (AdSense and sponsors) Average monthly profit: $2,300 Business age: 18 months Owner hours: 15 hours per week

What the red-flag checker (https://firstpassmemo.com/checker/) returns: payback of 22.6 months on average monthly profit, and this flag:

Medium Seller reports 15 hours a week

That time either becomes your job or a cost you pay someone else, which lowers the real profit.

Ask: Which tasks take the time, and what would it cost to hand them to a contractor?

## What to check

- Ask which tasks take the time, week by week.

- Ask what it would cost to hand each task to a contractor.

- Re-run payback with the replacement cost in the true payback calculator.

## Questions to send the seller

- Which tasks take the time, and what would it cost to hand them to a contractor?

- Does the P&L include any pay for your own time? If not, what would it cost to replace you?

- How many hours a week do you and any contractors spend, and on which tasks?

- Which tasks take the most time, and what would it cost to hand them to a contractor?
