Red flag explained · Price and earnings

# Priced below one year of profit: when cheap is a warning

Short answer: A business priced below one year of profit pays back in under 12 months, which is rare. Sellers usually price that low because the earnings are not expected to last, the business is hard to transfer, or the figures are out of date. Find out which before you treat it as a bargain.

Updated 7 October 2026 · Checker rule TOO_CHEAP

## When the checker raises it

Raised as medium severity when the asking price is less than 12 months of the profit figure the checker uses (an annual multiple below 1).

## Why it matters

In our October 2026 benchmark data, the middle half of listings asked 22 to 31 months of profit. A price under 12 months is far outside that range.

Common reasons are a recent drop in traffic or sales that the averages do not show yet, a platform problem such as a pending account review, a business that depends on the owner personally, or a seller who needs cash fast. Only the last one is good news for a buyer.

## How often we see it

In our October 2026 benchmark data (https://firstpassmemo.com/data/), 1 of the 36 listings asked less than one year of profit. That data covers 36 listings priced $10k–150k from the WebsitesForSaleOnline public API, Empire Flippers excluded, using the figures each listing states.

## A worked example

Composite example, not a real listing

Affiliate site reviewing camping gear, Amazon Associates Asking price: $9,000 Average monthly revenue: $1,300 Average monthly profit: $1,200 Business age: 6 years Owner hours: 2 hours per week

Traffic or revenue sources typed in: Organic search 85%, Direct 10%, Social 5%.

What the red-flag checker (https://firstpassmemo.com/checker/) returns: payback of 7.5 months on average monthly profit, and this flag:

Medium Priced below one year of profit (0.63×)

Very low multiples often mean the earnings are not expected to last, the business is hard to transfer, or the numbers are out of date.

Ask: Why is the price below one year of profit, and are these profit figures current?

The same example also raises: Depends on Amazon (https://firstpassmemo.com/flags/depends-on-a-platform/), Organic search is about 85% of traffic (https://firstpassmemo.com/flags/organic-search-over-half-of-traffic/), Very high margin (92%) (https://firstpassmemo.com/flags/very-high-margin/), No connected data source mentioned (https://firstpassmemo.com/flags/no-connected-data-source/), Concentration not disclosed (https://firstpassmemo.com/flags/concentration-not-disclosed/).

## What to check

- Ask why the price is below one year of profit, in those words.

- Ask for the last three months on their own, not only the average.

- Ask whether any platform, ad account or supplier has warned, suspended or changed terms in the last year.

## Questions to send the seller

- Why is the price below one year of profit, and are these profit figures current?

- Why is the price below one year of profit, and are the profit figures current?

- Has the business been listed before or had offers that did not close? What happened?

- How much inventory is included in the price, and how is it valued?
