# Zero or negative profit: when a listing cannot pay back any price

Short answer: A business with zero or negative profit cannot pay back any price from its earnings, so the checker shows payback as not reachable. You would be buying revenue, code, traffic or a brand, not income. Price it on what it would cost you to build, and ask why it is not profitable.

Updated 7 October 2026 · Checker rule NO_EARNINGS

## When the checker raises it

Raised as high severity when the profit figure the checker uses is zero or below. The checker reads only positive profit from pasted text, so this flag comes from a zero or negative figure typed into the monthly profit box.

## Why it matters

Payback assumes profit arrives every month. At zero or below, the months never add up to the price.

Loss-making businesses do sell, usually because the buyer believes they can cut costs or grow revenue. That is a plan, not a property of the listing, and you carry all of the risk that the plan does not work.

## A worked example

Composite example, not a real listing

Shopify store selling handmade candles Asking price: $15,000 Average monthly revenue: $6,200 Average monthly costs: $6,550 Business age: 2 years Owner hours: 15 hours per week

Typed into the checker's boxes: monthly profit: −$350.

Traffic or revenue sources typed in: Paid 70%, Organic search 10%, Direct 20%.

What the red-flag checker (https://firstpassmemo.com/checker/) returns: no payback figure, and this flag:

High Zero or negative profit

On average monthly profit ($-350) the business does not earn enough to pay back any price.

Ask: Is the business profitable today? Please share the monthly P&L.

The same example also raises: Paid is about 70% of traffic (https://firstpassmemo.com/flags/one-channel-over-60-percent-of-traffic/), Seller reports 15 hours a week (https://firstpassmemo.com/flags/owner-works-over-10-hours-a-week/), No connected data source mentioned (https://firstpassmemo.com/flags/no-connected-data-source/), Concentration not disclosed (https://firstpassmemo.com/flags/concentration-not-disclosed/).

## What to check

- Ask for the P&L and which costs cause the loss.

- Ask which costs would stop after the sale, and for evidence for each one.

- Compare the price with what it would cost to build the same product, audience or traffic yourself.

## Questions to send the seller

- Is the business profitable today? Please share the monthly P&L.

- Is the business profitable today, and what do this month's numbers show so far?

- If the business is not yet profitable, which costs would a new owner cut, and why have they not been cut already?
