How do you buy a Shopify app business?

Short answer: A Shopify app is transferred by Shopify Partner Support between Partner organisations, so confirm the app qualifies before you sign. Verify 24 months of payouts in the Partner Dashboard, installs and uninstalls, merchant churn and reviews, and price in that most customers find the app through the Shopify App Store, a platform you do not control.

How is a Shopify app transferred to a new owner?

Through Shopify Partner Support. Shopify's Partner Program FAQ (read 16 October 2026) says you contact Support by logging in to your Partner account and choosing chat or email for your Partner organisation, and a Shopify staff reply on the developer forum (30 July 2026) says the step is to "contact Partner Support and request an app ownership transfer". There is no transfer button we could find in Shopify's documentation, so:

What should you verify in a Shopify app?

  1. Payouts in the Partner Dashboard for 24 months, matched to bank deposits.
  2. Installs, uninstalls and active paying stores by month: uninstalls are your churn.
  3. Plan mix: how much revenue is on free trials, discounts or one large merchant.
  4. Reviews and rating trend, and support tickets per month.
  5. Platform exposure: Shopify API changes the app depends on, and how much traffic comes from App Store search.
  6. Costs and hours: hosting per store, support hours and any contractor.

What does a Shopify app look like through the checker?

A composite order-tagging app asks $65,000 on $2,800 of MRR and $2,300 a month of profit, with 4% monthly churn and 310 paying stores. The checker gives 28.3 months of payback and flags dependence on one platform. Open this example in the checker.

Composite example, not a real listing

Shopify app for order tagging, subscriptions billed through Shopify
Asking price: $65,000
MRR: $2,800
Average monthly profit: $2,300
Churn: 4% monthly
310 paying stores
Business age: 2 years
Owner hours: 6 hours per week

Traffic sources typed in: Shopify App Store 80%, Organic search 15%, Direct 5%.

What the red-flag checker returns: a payback of 28.3 months (2.36× annual profit) on average monthly profit, and these flags:

  1. Medium Depends on Shopify App Store, Apple App Store (80% of Shopify)

The listing relies on a platform the buyer does not control. A policy, fee, algorithm or account change there can cut revenue quickly.

Ask: If Shopify App Store changed its rules or closed the account tomorrow, what share of revenue would be at risk? Has it happened before?

    How this rule works

  2. Medium No connected data source mentioned

The figures appear to be typed in by the seller. Nothing in the text says revenue or traffic is connected from Stripe, PayPal, analytics or a marketplace check.

Ask: Can you give read-only access to the payment processor and analytics, or exports that match the P&L?

    How this rule works

  3. Low Concentration not disclosed

The listing does not say how much revenue comes from the largest customer, affiliate program or traffic partner.

Ask: What share of revenue comes from the top 1 and top 3 customers or partners?

    How this rule works

How does merchant churn change the price?

In the churn stress test, the same app adds $140 of new MRR a month against 4% churn. New sales outrun losses, so payback is 25.9 months. If App Store installs dried up, MRR would fall to $1,716 in a year and the price would never be repaid. That is the number to discuss with the seller: where installs come from, and how stable that source has been.

Frequently asked questions

Can a Shopify app be transferred to another Partner account?

Yes, through Shopify Partner Support: a Shopify staff member on the developer forum advises contacting Partner Support to request an app ownership transfer. Confirm it before signing.

What is the biggest risk when buying a Shopify app?

Dependence on Shopify: App Store ranking, API changes and billing all sit on Shopify's platform. Measure how much revenue would survive a change there before agreeing a price.

How do I measure churn on a Shopify app?

Use paying stores and uninstalls by month from the Partner Dashboard, not a figure the seller quotes, and compute revenue churn from the payouts.
