Can a Stripe account be transferred when you buy a SaaS?

Short answer: Yes, usually. Stripe's help pages say the seller should contact Stripe Support first; the owner details, bank account, legal name and tax ID then change. If your buying company is in another country, ownership moves first, you open a new Stripe account in your country and ask Stripe to copy data across. Agree the route before signing.

Can the seller hand over the existing Stripe account?

In most same-country sales, yes. Stripe's help article on transferring an account after a business sale or acquisition (read 7 October 2026) tells the existing owner to contact Stripe Support first, to confirm which details will change. Stripe then enables the new owner's representative details to be entered directly in the account, and the owner can change the payout bank account, statement descriptor and phone number, receipt details, the owner email address, and the legal business name and tax ID from the account settings.

Keeping the account matters because subscriptions, saved payment methods and payment history stay where they are. Customers see no change beyond the new descriptor, and nobody has to re-enter a card.

What happens if my company is in another country?

A Stripe account's country cannot be changed once it is activated or has taken a live charge, according to Stripe's help page on account country. For a business acquired by a company in a different country, Stripe describes three steps: transfer ownership to the new owner, open a new Stripe account in the new country, then ask Stripe Support for a data transfer from the old account to the new one.

That data transfer is a copy, and a narrow one. Stripe's article on copying account data says only the raw customer objects come across; charges, invoices, plans and subscriptions, coupons, events and logs do not. Customer IDs stay the same, but you recreate plans and subscriptions in the new account and keep the old account for its history.

How much revenue is at risk in a move to a new account?

Stripe does not publish how many subscriptions survive a move, so treat it as an assumption to test. The table below takes a composite SaaS with $4,000 of MRR, an 80% margin and a $110,000 price, and shows what payback becomes if part of the MRR does not make it across.

Share of MRR that does not come acrossMRR after the moveMonthly profit at 80% marginPayback on $110,000
0%$4,000$3,20034.4 months
5%$3,800$3,04036.2 months
10%$3,600$2,88038.2 months
20%$3,200$2,56043 months

Composite: $4,000 MRR, 80% margin, $110,000 price. The lost shares are assumptions to test, not Stripe figures.

Losing one subscriber in ten adds about four months to payback. If a new account is likely, ask the seller how many customers pay by card on file and how many by invoice, and price the move before you sign, not after.

What should the purchase agreement say about Stripe?

When should this be sorted out?

Before the letter of intent if you are buying from another country, and before escrow is funded in every case. Verify the revenue first with View Only access, as in how to verify Stripe revenue, then confirm the transfer route. The remaining checks are in the small SaaS due diligence answer.
