Can you transfer an AdSense account when buying a website?

Short answer: No. Google's AdSense Help says the terms do not permit transfers of account ownership, and the policies allow one account per publisher. The seller removes the site from their account, you add it to your own and wait for Google to approve it, and ad income can pause in between. Price that gap before you agree terms.

Why can't an AdSense account move with the website?

An AdSense account belongs to a person or a company, not to a site. Google's AdSense Help page on payments profiles (read 7 October 2026) says the AdSense Terms and Conditions do not permit transfers of account ownership, and its page on multiple accounts says AdSense policies allow only one account per publisher. Flippa's help centre gives buyers the same answer: the new owner needs their own AdSense account, and approval is at Google's discretion.

So a seller who offers to hand over their AdSense login is offering something the terms do not allow. Decline it, even if it would avoid a gap in income.

How does the switch work, step by step?

  1. Before closing, see the earnings yourself (below) and agree a switch date.
  2. At closing, the seller removes the site from their AdSense account and takes out their ad code.
  3. You add the site to your own AdSense account, or apply for one if you have none, and place your code.
  4. Google reviews the site. Until it approves, the site earns nothing from AdSense.

The same AdSense Help page notes that a payments country cannot be changed, so a buyer in another country always uses an account registered there.

How do I verify AdSense earnings before buying?

Ask for a live screen share where you choose what to open: the AdSense reports for 12 to 24 months, filtered to this site only, and the payments history showing what was actually paid out. A seller with several sites in one account has to filter by site, so check that the domain in the report is the one you are buying. Screenshots and exported reports can be edited and prove little on their own. Match earnings to traffic, as in how to verify website traffic.

What does the income gap cost?

Google does not publish how long a review takes, so price a range. In the composite below, a $45,000 site earns $1,600 a month in profit, $1,400 of it from AdSense.

Weeks without ad incomeAdSense income lostPrice plus lost incomePayback on $1,600 monthly profit
0$0$45,00028.1 months
2$646$45,64628.5 months
4$1,292$46,29228.9 months
8$2,585$47,58529.7 months

Composite: $45,000 price, $1,600 monthly profit, $1,400 a month of it from AdSense. Lost income = $1,400 × weeks × 12 ÷ 52. Google does not publish an approval time.

A month without ad income adds about $1,300 to the real cost. It is small next to a traffic drop, but it is a fair thing to negotiate: some buyers ask for the gap to be covered by a price reduction, or for the switch to happen on a date when traffic is seasonally low.

What about other ad networks?

Other display ad networks have their own terms and approval rules, and many set traffic minimums. Read the network's own terms before you count on keeping it, and ask the seller which network accounts are in their name. Then check what drives the traffic those ads depend on: for a site that relies on Google, see how to tell if a content site was hit by a Google update.
