How do you buy an Amazon KDP book catalogue?

Short answer: Amazon's KDP Help says it cannot move specific books from one account to another, so you usually buy the publishing rights and republish the titles in your own account as new listings, or buy the company that owns the account. Verify 24 months of royalty reports and payments, title concentration and rights paperwork first.

Can a KDP account or its books be transferred to a buyer?

Not book by book. Amazon's KDP Help page on managing your account (read 16 October 2026) says: "We cannot move specific books from one account to another." It also says Amazon and KDP do not allow a second account under a different email address, and that account merging is for consolidating one publisher's own accounts. Account details, tax profile, sales reports, payment information, active ads and A+ Content do not move in a merge. The only special case on that page is a deceased or incapacitated author's account. In practice a catalogue sale takes one of two shapes:

Agree which one before you talk price, because the first shape usually means relaunching the books without their existing sales record, which changes what the income is worth.

What should you verify before buying a KDP catalogue?

  1. 24 months of royalty reports from KDP Reports, downloaded during a screen share, and the matching payments in the bank.
  2. Title concentration: what share of royalties the top five titles earn.
  3. Trend by title: low-content and trend-driven titles can fade quickly.
  4. Ad spend in the Amazon Ads console, so you are buying organic royalties, not paid ones.
  5. Rights: who wrote each book, what the contracts say, and whether any content, covers or fonts are licensed in ways that do not transfer.
  6. Other channels: wide distribution, audiobooks or direct sales that come with the catalogue.

What does a KDP catalogue look like through the checker?

We ran a composite listing through our red-flag checker: 140 titles asking $36,000 on $1,500 a month of profit, with the top five titles at 62% of royalties and last month at $1,050. Payback reads 24 months, but the flags show falling profit and full dependence on one platform. Open this example in the checker to see the report and its seller questions.

Composite example, not a real listing

Amazon KDP catalogue, 140 nonfiction and low-content titles, top 5 titles are 62% of royalties
Asking price: $36,000
Average monthly revenue: $1,900
Average monthly profit: $1,500
Last month profit: $1,050
Business age: 3 years
Owner hours: 3 hours per week

Traffic sources typed in: Amazon 100%.

What the red-flag checker returns: a payback of 24 months (2× annual profit) on average monthly profit, and these flags:

  1. Medium Last month's profit is 30% below the average

Last month $1,050 against an average of $1,500. A price set on the average overstates what the business earns now.

Ask: What pushed last month below the average, and is it a one-off or a trend?

    How this rule works

  2. Medium Depends on Amazon (100% of Amazon)

The listing relies on a platform the buyer does not control. A policy, fee, algorithm or account change there can cut revenue quickly.

Ask: Has the Amazon account ever had a suspension, listing removal or policy warning, and what share of revenue would stop if it did?

    How this rule works

  3. Medium No traffic data for a traffic-driven site

Revenue for this kind of site follows traffic, and the listing gives no traffic figures to check it against.

Ask: Can you share 12 to 24 months of analytics and Search Console data?

    How this rule works

  4. Medium No connected data source mentioned

The figures appear to be typed in by the seller. Nothing in the text says revenue or traffic is connected from Stripe, PayPal, analytics or a marketplace check.

Ask: Can you give read-only access to the payment processor and analytics, or exports that match the P&L?

    How this rule works

  5. Low Concentration not disclosed

The listing does not say how much revenue comes from the largest customer, affiliate program or traffic partner.

Ask: What share of revenue comes from the top 1 and top 3 customers or partners?

    How this rule works

What does republishing cost you in payback?

Add $2,000 of one-time costs to the example (an assumed budget for rights paperwork, new ISBNs where needed and relaunch ads) and 3 hours a week of upkeep at $25 an hour. In the true payback calculator, payback moves from 24 to 32.3 months, before any loss of sales from relaunching the books as new listings.

Composite example, run through the true payback calculator

Inputs and results
Asking price$36,000

Owner time per month$325

If last month's lower profit is the new normal, rerun the figures on $1,050. AI assistants can run the same check through our free MCP server at https://firstpassmemo.com/mcp.

Frequently asked questions

Can you sell a KDP account?

KDP's Help says it cannot move specific books between accounts and does not allow second accounts. Buyers usually acquire publishing rights and republish, or buy the company that owns the account.

What multiple do KDP catalogues sell for?

We know of no published sold-multiple data for KDP catalogues. Price on verified royalties after ads and upkeep, with a discount for concentration in a few titles and for the relaunch risk if the books must be republished.

Do book reviews transfer when a KDP book is republished?

A republished book is a new listing in your account, so plan as if the existing listing's history will not come with it, and confirm the details with KDP support before you agree a price.
