Generic reason for sale: why "other opportunities" deserves a question

Short answer: "Focusing on other projects" is the most common reason for sale and often true. It is also what a seller says when the real reason is falling revenue or a platform problem. The checker rates it low, but it is worth one direct question in your first message: why sell now?

Updated 7 October 2026 · Checker rule GENERIC_REASON

When the checker raises it

Raised as low severity when the stated reason for sale mentions other opportunities, new projects or focusing on something else.

Why it matters

The timing of a sale is information. A seller who is selling at a peak, or just before a known change, knows something you do not.

A good answer is specific: a new job, a family change, a different business that needs the time. A vague one proves nothing, but it puts more weight on the numbers.

What the red-flag checker returns: payback of 22.5 months on average monthly profit, and this flag:

  1. Low Generic reason for sale

A vague reason is common, but worth a direct question.

Ask: Why sell now, and what would you do with the business if it does not sell?

The same example also raises: Concentration not disclosed.

What to check

Questions to send the seller

  1. Why sell now, and what would you do with the business if it does not sell?
  2. Has the business been listed before or had offers that did not close? What happened?
  3. Will you start or keep any business in the same niche after the sale?
