Red flag explained · Trend
Revenue declining by 20% or more: what a stated decline means for the price
Short answer: A listing that reports revenue down 20% or more is telling you the business is shrinking. Declines tend to continue after a sale unless the cause is known and fixable. Price it on where revenue is heading, not on the average, and ask what is causing the fall.
When the checker raises it
Raised when the listing states a decline of 20% or more in revenue, sales, profit or income: medium severity from 20%, high severity from 30%.
Why it matters
Content sites after Google updates, Amazon products facing new competitors and SaaS tools losing to a free alternative all show this pattern. The cause matters more than the size of the drop.
A fixable cause, such as a broken checkout or a lapsed ad campaign, can make a declining business a fair buy. A structural cause, such as lost rankings or a platform policy change, usually does not reverse on its own.
A worked example
Composite example, not a real listing
Asking price: $42,000
Average monthly revenue: $1,700
Average monthly profit: $1,500 (last 12 months)
Revenue trend: -25% year over year
Business age: 5 years
Owner hours: 4 hours per week
Traffic or revenue sources typed in: Organic search 88%, Direct 7%, Social 5%.
What the red-flag checker returns: payback of 28 months on average monthly profit, and this flag:
Medium Revenue trend -25%
The listing reports a decline of this size. Declines tend to continue after a sale unless the cause is known and fixable.
Ask: What is causing the decline, what has been tried, and what do the last three months look like?
The same example also raises: Depends on Mediavine/ad network, Organic search is about 88% of traffic, No connected data source mentioned, Concentration not disclosed.
What to check
- Ask what is causing the decline, what has been tried and what the last three months look like.
- For search-driven sites, ask for 16 months of Search Console data and compare drops with Google update dates.
- Run the traffic-drop test or rework payback on the latest month.
Questions to send the seller
- What is causing the decline, what has been tried, and what do the last three months look like?
- What is causing the revenue decline, what have you tried, and what changed as a result?
- Can you show the same month last year, so seasonality can be separated from decline?
- Has traffic had any sudden spikes or drops, and what caused them?
