Red flag explained · Numbers that disagree

Profit higher than revenue: a figure is mislabelled or wrong

Short answer: Profit cannot be higher than revenue. When a listing shows it, one of the figures is mislabelled, covers a different period, or is wrong. It is often a typing error, but you cannot work out payback or margin until it is fixed. Ask the seller to correct the P&L before you go further.

Updated 7 October 2026 · Checker rule PROFIT_GT_REV

When the checker raises it

Raised as high severity when the profit figure is more than 1% above the revenue figure for the same period.

Why it matters

Mixed periods are the usual cause: a monthly profit next to an older monthly revenue figure, or profit that includes a one-off sale of assets.

Whatever the cause, every ratio built on these numbers is unreliable until the seller corrects them.

How often we see it

In our October 2026 benchmark data, 1 of the 36 listings showed profit above revenue. That data covers 36 listings priced $10k–150k from the WebsitesForSaleOnline public API, Empire Flippers excluded, using the figures each listing states.

A worked example

Composite example, not a real listing

Finance content site, display ads and affiliate links
Asking price: $60,000
Average monthly revenue: $2,300
Average monthly profit: $2,450
Business age: 6 years
Owner hours: 3 hours per week

Traffic or revenue sources typed in: Organic search 80%, Direct 15%, Social 5%.

What the red-flag checker returns: payback of 24.5 months on average monthly profit, and this flag:

  1. High Profit is higher than revenue

$2,450 profit against $2,300 revenue. One of the numbers is mislabeled or wrong.

Ask: Can you correct the P&L? Profit cannot exceed revenue.

The same example also raises: Organic search is about 80% of traffic, No connected data source mentioned, Concentration not disclosed.

What to check

Questions to send the seller

  1. Can you correct the P&L? Profit cannot exceed revenue.
  2. Can you send the P&L lines behind the revenue and profit figures in the listing?
  3. Profit appears higher than revenue in the listing. Which figure is mislabeled, and what are the correct numbers?
