Red flag explained · Traffic and platforms

Organic search above half of traffic: Google update risk

Short answer: When organic search brings more than half the traffic, a Google update can cut revenue quickly, and a new owner cannot control that. Google ran nine core and eight spam updates between March 2024 and September 2026. Ask for 16 months of Search Console data and compare it with those dates.

When the checker raises it

Raised as medium severity when organic search is more than 50% of stated traffic.

Why it matters

Search traffic is valuable because it is free and steady, until it is not. Sites hit by an update rarely recover within months, and some never do.

The fair question is not whether a site depends on search, since most content sites do, but whether it held up through recent updates and whether the price leaves room for a drop.

A worked example

Composite example, not a real listing

Display-ad content site about aquarium care, Mediavine ads
Asking price: $45,000
Average monthly revenue: $1,800
Average monthly profit: $1,600
Business age: 5 years
Owner hours: 4 hours per week

Traffic or revenue sources typed in: Organic search 88%, Direct 7%, Social 5%.

What the red-flag checker returns: payback of 28.1 months on average monthly profit, and this flag:

  1. Medium Organic search is about 88% of traffic

Search traffic can fall sharply after a Google update, and a new owner cannot control that.

Ask: Can you share 16 months of Search Console clicks and impressions, and any drops around Google updates?

The same example also raises: Depends on Mediavine/ad network, No connected data source mentioned, Concentration not disclosed.

What to check

Questions to send the seller

  1. Can you share 16 months of Search Console clicks and impressions, and any drops around Google updates?
  2. Can you share 16 months of Search Console clicks and impressions, including any drops around Google updates?
  3. The listing credits SEO for growth. How many trial or paid sign-ups came from organic search last month?
  4. How did traffic move through each Google core update in the last 18 months?
