How do you verify a YouTube channel's revenue before buying it?
Short answer: Ask for a live screen share of the Revenue tab in YouTube Analytics and check 24 months of revenue by month, by video and by source, then match AdSense payments to bank deposits. Watch for income concentrated in a few videos, dependence on recommendations, a shifting audience geography, and sponsorships that depend on the current presenter.
Where is YouTube revenue reported?
YouTube Analytics has a Revenue tab for channels in the YouTube Partner Program, with estimated revenue by month, by video and by source (ads, memberships, Premium and others). YouTube's help page on ad revenue analytics explains the metrics, including RPM (revenue per thousand views, after YouTube's share). Ask for a live screen share, then match AdSense payments to bank deposits.
What should you look at in YouTube Analytics?
- Revenue by month for 24 months. A channel can earn most of its money from one viral period.
- Revenue by video. If the top three videos make most of the money, you are buying a few videos, not a channel.
- Views by traffic source. Browse and suggested views depend on the recommendation system; search views are steadier.
- Audience geography. RPM varies widely by country, so a shift in audience changes income even with flat views.
- Sponsorship income. It sits outside YouTube. Ask for invoices and whether sponsors will stay with a new owner or presenter.
Can a YouTube channel be transferred?
Channels linked to a Brand Account can change primary owner; YouTube's help pages describe how owners and managers are changed. Monetisation stays with the channel, but payments go to the AdSense account linked to it, which will need to change to yours. Plan the order of steps with the seller and use escrow.
What does the checker flag?
The free checker raises platform dependence on every YouTube channel, and often declining revenue or owner hours not stated. If the seller presents on camera, the audience may not stay when they leave. See how much a YouTube channel is worth and is buying a YouTube channel worth it?
Questions to send the seller
- Can you screen-share the Revenue tab by month and by video for 24 months?
- Who appears on camera or voices the videos, and will they continue?
- Has the channel had community-guideline strikes, copyright claims or limited ads?
- Is the channel on a Brand Account so ownership can be transferred?
